Womens’ style predictions for 2017

And yet most women are still buying chemical-laden moisturisers, cleansers and creams, with little knowledge of what’s in them that may be harmful to our bodies in the long term. Step in best-in-class organic luxury skincare – products that actually work, smell good, and are pure for our bodies, inside and out. Kjaer Weis and May Lindstrom are two of my favourites. Stock up on the former’s facial oil when it launches exclusively on Net-A-Porter at the end of January.

The jury’s still out on virtual reality

Like 3D TV, Augmented Reality never really went anywhere, did it? Now all eyes are on Virtual Reality (VR) – with Google’s Tilt Brush recently showcasing to a fashion crowd how easy it is to create a 3D dress in another dimension (although the showcase had to be rescued when the demonstrator got tangled up in her own alternative reality and needed a reset!).

With endless possibilities, VR would make a lot of things that much easier: bespoke, couture, sampling, fashion show participation and so on. But reality is a hard thing to nail down and it’s yet to be seen whether VR in fashion will stick, or go the way of Google Glass by dying a quick death.

Fashion’s merry-go-round keeps on spinning

If all else fails you can rely on fashion’s merry-go-round to keep you distracted. Former designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia return as creative directors at Oscar de la Renta, with Kim leaving a vacancy at Carolina Herrera – meaning we’ll see new perspectives at both of these classic American brands.

Meanwhile Bouchra Jarrar at Lanvin and Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior will both produce follow-up shows that may be even more exciting than their debuts as the designers unpack more of their original ideas and extend their vocabulary for the much-loved brands.

It remains to be seen what will happen at Italian labels Cavalli and Valentino – the former is seeking a creative director to replace Peter Dundas, while the latter has a newly singular vision at the helm as Pierpaolo Piccioli takes the reins solo following Chiuri’s departure to Dior. Will they pivot, maintain or change up what they offer? And there will be sure to be yet more turbulence at global houses as many long-term contracts don’t get renewed… As always, watch this space.
