One thing that is inevitable when chasing a huge goal is the arrival of occasional self-doubt. Fear can paralyze us, preventing us from succeeding in a big way. For entrepreneurs especially, succumbing to fear is not a viable option.
Could you imagine if Steve Jobs let the fear of failure stop him from dreaming up his company? Or if Oprah allowed the fear of not being good enough prevent her from ever trying? We would not know their names today, and the world would undoubtedly be a much less fascinating place.
After being held hostage at gun point in a foreign country my world changed. Although a terrifying experience, the lessons learnt over a decade ago have shaped my entrepreneurial journey for the better. As I’ve continued to evolve, I’ve come to realize that no matter the source of fear, the best ways to overcome it is a constant. The same strategies used to overcome a frightening hostage situation with my sanity intact can be applied to business as well. Below are 4 of my favorite tips to overcoming the fear of failure and shining in your industry.
1. Rearrange the Voice and Increase Your Confidence.
Like a crying baby, fear continues to grow louder if left alone. We must lift up the fearful voice and change it. In other words, we must change the nagging thoughts of, “I’m not good enough to pull this off” and “What happens if I make an idiot of myself?” to “This is my time.” and “What happens if this brave move is the catalyst needed for massive growth?” Whenever the pessimistic voice of doubt enters say the word “cancel” and immediately rearrange the wording of the fearful voice in a way that better serves you.
By simply adjusting our thought patterns, raising the thought from a low-lying fearful one to a much higher optimistic voice, we create a positive dialog with our subconscious and as a result, our confidence in our own abilities increases. This newfound confidence allows us to better sell our products and services.
2. Will the Nerve to Act by Keeping the End in View.
When fear strikes, you must keep the end in view. Take a deep breath, count to five and do the exact thing you are terrified to do. Like a child taking their first steps, you must push aside the fear of potentially falling on your behind, as the prize, in this case your walk to Successville, is well worth the possible scrapes and bruises.
Hold tight to your vision of success and allow that to give you the strength needed to act. Action causes fear to subside almost instantly. Dale Carnegie once said, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer a fear, don’t just sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” Separate yourself from the packs by being an action taker.
3. Keep it all in Perspective.
When faced with fear, I like to do something called “The death-bed perspective”. This entails thinking to yourself, if today were your last day on Earth, would you be satisfied with the impact made and lives touched? Would you regret not taking the steps necessary to move forward due to fear?
These questions remove the fear by forcing you to focus on your “why” of business. Having a clear “why” always separates the duds from the diamonds in any industry. Find yours and shine bright.
