US & China on ‘brink of new Cold War’: Chinese foreign minister

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on Sunday (May 24) claimed that the United States is pushing relations with China to “the brink of a new Cold War”, with tensions soaring over the COVID-19 outbreak, Hong Kong’s status and other issues.

“It has come to our attention that some political forces in the US are taking China-US relations hostage and pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War,” foreign minister Wang Yi told reporters.

He also claimed that the Hong Kong security law must be imposed ‘without slightest delay’.

As per the new legislation, many freedoms that the island nation has been reportedly abolished, and gives more control to China.

Commenting on China’s initiative to introduce new security legislation, Trump had said, “Nobody knows yet. If it happens we`ll address that issue very strongly.”

However, Wang did hit back and accused the White House of seeking to repeatedly “attack and smear” China.
“Aside from the devastation caused by the novel coronavirus, there is also a political virus spreading through the US,” Wang said during a press conference on the side of the annual legislative meeting.

“This political virus is the use of every opportunity to attack and smear China. Some politicians completely disregard basic facts and have fabricated too many lies targeting China, and plotted too many conspiracies.”
