Who knows where the hell we’ll be in four or five years. The exhausting quagmire that was 2016 has left us pondering the fate of the nation and the state of the world, but in an effort to lighten the mood a bit, let us look to the runways for respite. This year, fashion made us smile with theatrical shows and dramatic clothes, some of which we’ll look back on fondly and say, “Oh, that was so 2016.” First off, among Gucci’s hodgepodge pile of majorly collectable and covetable pieces for Fall and Spring, Alessandro Michele made a wild, fur-lined loafer the undeniable It shoe of the year. Then there was Demna Gvasalia, who left editors and Instagrammers salivating after he sent giant puffer coats (worn off the shoulder, of course) down the Balenciaga runway. And even for those who have written off the new blonde-topped, Donald Trump–chummy Kanye West, there’s no denying the continued success of his Pablo merch.
These are the items we’ll always attach to this past year and the ones that we’ll take with us as we forge ahead into 2017 armed, at the very least, with style.
