WITH CHINA extending support to Pakistan in the aftermath of the Uri attack, blocking a tributary of Brahmaputra river and continuing to block India’s bid for banning JeM chief Masood Azhar, a movement against purchasing Chinese goods is building up in Haryana.
Appeals are being made on social media — even by the leaders of the ruling BJP in the state — asking people to boycott Chinese goods, especially during Diwali. BJP leaders are also advocating the use of “swadeshi”. Leading the bandwagon is state’s Health Minister Anil Vij who has appealed to people not to use Chinese goods. In Jaipur Campaigns calling for boycott of Chinese products have impacted sales of those items by up to 40% here with many people preferring to buy India-made products only during their festive shopping.

Wholesalers in India’s largest wholesale market Sadar Bazaar have already claimed that they are seeing a drop of at least 20 per cent in Chinese made products and the Confederation of All India Traders recently predicted that the traders expect they will suffer at least 30 per cent loss due to the boycott of Chinese-made products. Also, boycotting Chinese-made products on Diwali is also not a solution as after that, and for every non-festive purchase, all products are in some way Chinese made.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed for greater business integration with China at the BRICS Summit even though the ‘corner Pakistan’ plan didn’t take off at the summit. It makes sense to push trade with China when you consider that early in 2016 India-China trade deficit was reported well above $44 billion. This is a grave concern for the Indian economy and to achieve a sustained balance of trade, both the countries had even signed a five-year cooperation agreement to achieve this balance.

India and China have shared a love-hate relationship since the mid 20th century. However, India’s boycott won’t even put a dent on the Chinese economy. It is, however, a self-blow. The need and promise of economic prosperity keeps the India-China and relation amicable, stable and somewhat peaceful.
Boycott of products at a time when long-term plans have not yet fully yielded results causes negative impact at home. Without suitable Indian alternatives, boycotting Chinese products hurts the earning of the Indian trader who has invested his money in them and now is unable to sell them off to earn the money back. If these boycotts are to take place, they need to be taken at the root. However, almost every product used in our daily life has some prominent element that is Chinese. This demand just proves to be unfeasible, impulsive and not well thought out.

India’s bilateral trade with the US – a country India has built close ties with – stood at $23 billion in 2015. However, bilateral trade between two hostile powers US and China stood at over $367 billion the same year. This shows that economic engagement needs to be discussed outside the absolute political and diplomatic space.

However some people are saying that , It’s too late to boycott. Money is already with the Chinese manufacturers and if these products are not sold in the market just due to a boycott, it will be a tremendous loss for the traders and will eventually be a loss for the Indian economy.
Chinese products are cheap when compared to Indian products. A boycott of Chinese goods is not going to make Indian products cheap and competitive. It will remove competition instead and Indian businesses will have a monopoly. It could even lead to bad products, goods and services. Public Sectors Undertakings of the Indian government before liberalisation is a classic example of it.
As they are cheap, they are easy to purchase. Remember, people in India may not be able to buy expensive jute bags. Chinese poly-bags might be a much better alternative. The middle class of Indian society will not have problems with the boycott. However, if there is a lack of availability of Chinese products, poor people will have to sacrifice the most.
China Warns Boycott Of Its Goods Will Impact India Ties, Investments. According to the statement, the distinct features of China-and more than 100 million dollars’ worth of black tea from India, bring benefits to 1.2 million cotton growers and 50000 tea farmers and sellers in India.”Moreover, 60-70 per cent of Indian APIs for its pharmaceutical industry are from China. China has played an important role in Indian pharmaceutical industry’s march to EU and America market. India trade are mutual benefits and growing inter- dependence, which contributes to the full use of factors of production and maximization of the benefits to all the people.”In 2015, China has imported 2 billion dollars’ worth of cotton. Now it is upto you people , think twice before purchasing chinese goods will worth or worst.
