Jaunpur (Uttar Pradesh): The Howarh-Dehradun Doon Express met with an accident near Jaunpur on Thursday afternoon. At least four passengers lost their lives while over a dozen others were injured in the accident.
Five bogies of the 13009 Doon Express derailed near Mihrawan station near Jaunpur junction shortly after 1 pm today. All the derailed bogies are Sleeper Class bogies S-6, S-7, S-8, S-9 and SE-1; two more bogies suffered damages, reports said.
Although the Railways has only confirmed four deaths, yet an eye witness has claimed that at least six people have lost their lives in the tragic accident.
The district administration has begun rescue and relief work even as relief trains are on their way from Varanasi, Faizabad and Lucknow. Currently, locals and medical teams from nearby hospitals are at the spot.
As per a passenger, the train was travelling at high speed at the time of the accident.
The Railways on its part is yet to identify the exact cause for the derailment. Railway Board Member AP Mishra said that the accident may have occurred due to heat induced track deformation. He did not rule out sabotage either.
Railway Minister Mukul Roy expressed regret over the loss of human lives. Before heading to the accident site, Roy announced that the Railways will provide Rs five lakhs as compensation to the families of each of the deceased, besides a job in the Railways. The injured will also get a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each.
Meanwhile, Roy’s party chief and former railway minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded a thorough probe into the accident.
