Within a year of becoming the owner of The Trump Organization which owned 14,000 properties in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, Donald Trump, aged 26, faced his first major controversy. The Department of Justice sued him and his father Fred C Trump and charged him with discriminating against tenants because of their race. His first mention in The New York Times, in an article entitled, “Major Landlord Accused of Antiblack Bias in City,” was to deny the allegations. “They are absolutely ridiculous”, he said. Trump Management later reached an agreement that did not admit guilt, but required providing the New York Urban League with a list of apartment vacancies every week for two years.
